This is surely a vintage photograph of a vintage sign at the Gay Fish Company, on Saint Helena Island, near Frogmore and Beaufort, South Carolina. This sign is long gone, worn when the photo was taken in the 1990's, it is now completely missing out on the shrimp docks.
I am fortunate to live within walking distance of this magical, wonderful shrimping area, the docks now worn and scary to walk over. One can look right down through the boards into the teeming water below for there are many crabs and other creatures waiting for a tasty morsel to fall from the boats. Fresh shrimp and crabs and other fish can be bought right off the boats. If you visit the Gay Fish Conoany, make sure you go inside to the fish market. Newspaper articles from years past decorate the walls and specimens of huge Shrimp and odd creatures are on display. The people are friendly and helpful sharing how to cook these delights they have found in the pristine waters of the marsh and sea surrounding the area...
