Description
In Beaufort, South Carolina you can find most anything if you look hard enough. This is the remains of a really old building, probably built before the Civil War, constructed from a material called Tabby, which is a mixture of crushed shells, sand and water. It reminds me of the adobe of the southwest but has many shells in it.
This wall is on the Old Point near downtown Beaufort, which is also home to the Big Chill house, a reflecting pond with flying fish, a haunted mansion called the Castle, landscaping like you have never seen before and very interesting characters. When visiting Beaufort, make sure you come in the Fall when temperatures are half way sane and take a walk around the Old Point. Please do not take a carriage ride through this neighborhood because you will miss half of everything and be driven crazy by the drivers who talk constantly at a very loud volume. If you want a guided tour, look up John Sharp and take his guided walking tour. Or just walk around with a camera, point it at the great old houses and huge live oak trees and if people come out of their houses tell them how much you love the area and how their house is just great. You might be surprised by the hospitality and fun stories residents share.
